Daphne lives in Los Angeles with her chef and restaurateur husband Mark Peel. They have a daughter in pre school, Vivien, and a son, Rex, born in February. Daphne is working in partnership with MasterCard, Upromise and Bank of America and is being compensated for her time.

The end of the year always brings on a moment of summing up doesn't it?  Now that it's December, I start doing my own year in review.  Was it a good year?  I did give birth to a beautiful, healthy son in February, so I would say that's as good as it gets.  Was it a hard year?  We sold our home and moved to a smaller place after some financial losses.  Painful?  Challenging?  You bet.

What has gotten my husband and me through everything is that our kids are healthy, we are healthy and as much as possible, we look forward.  After that, it's all gravy.

What is best for our present financial security?  What is best for our kids in the long run so that they can still go to a good high school and college?   So, when I look back on this year I ask, "Did we handle this turmoil well?"  Frankly, I think we did.  I just want my kids to be happy so if I can keep them feeling secure and loved and not pass on my anxiety to them. I think I have done well. But, of course, these uncertain financial times have forced us to be more deliberate about our future.

These are the same questions everyone asks themselves as they lay awake before sleep comes, or in that sweet time in the morning after you have woken up, but before your kids are up needing your attention.  Am I taking care of our financial health?  Balancing wants like a new car, with needs -- a good education?

What have you done this year to help fulfill your desires for your child's future?  It's scary how quick a year goes.  One easy thing you can do is have your credit card be a Upromise World MasterCard® credit card from Bank of America

When I was asked if I would be a spokesperson for the Upromise World MasterCard it was a no brainer.  Everyone at some point uses a credit card, right?  Online purchases or rental cars -- you have to have one.  With the Upromise World MasterCard 1% of your purchases can go into your Upromise account and then be transferred into a 529 education fund for your child.  Or, if you need to pay off a student loan, you can use it for that. Also, if you go to upromise.com you will find tons of businesses that give you money back into your education fund for making eligible purchases with them.

It's like a rebate. And you don't have to do it alone.  When grandma asks what junior wants you can say, "Well, he wants a train, but if you purchase it with this card you will also give mom what she wants -- help paying for his college."

It's pretty simple to explain to relatives.

  • Use your Upromise World MasterCard

       - Earn cash back in your Upromise account on everyday purchases.

  • Shop online through upromise.com.

       -  Get 1%-25% back from eligible purchases at more than 700 online retailers.

  • Eat at participating restaurants.

       - You can get up to 8% back from more than 8,500 restaurants

  • Go to the grocery store or drug store.

       - Get 1-3% back on thousands of eligible items when you scan a Upromise registered grocery or drug store card at checkout.

The end of the year is a good time to think about the next several.
