Flights are short and not too expensive, or you could take the train (Amtrak).

Try Orbitz, Travelocity, Expedia, etc for flights.  You can also book directly through United through Upromise, but in my experience the flights are typically cheaper on the other sites, and they have better Upromise savings too.

As best as I can tell, there's no way to get Upromise savings by taking the train unless you use a Upromise Citi card.  Here's the Amtrak site if you're interested: http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage

There are cheap buses to/from Chinatown.  They are like $10 or $20 round trip.  Take a look in your local Asian newspaper or neighborhood.

Megabus will get you there for under $20 each way. And I believe they have wifi.

Re: Trip to N.Y.

There are a variety of busses.  These aren't your father's buses either, some have power and wifi connections besides for the regular movies. If you book far enough in advance you can find fares as low as $1.  Some leave from DC, while others depart from Bethesda, Silver Spring, and VA.

Re: Trip to N.Y.

Greetings Strawberry!

Amtrak offers a "Weekend Getaway" fare of $49.00 each way.
Here's a link: "Amtrak Weekend Getaway"

  • Travel must be booked at least three days in advance of departure date.
  • Travel must originate and return on Saturday or originate Saturday and return Sunday with departure by 10:59 am. (Maximum one night stay.)
  • Children 2-15 travel at 1/2 price.
  • You must book the round trip
  • No Promo Code needed
  • Northeast Regional Trains only;No Acela Express

There is another promotion called the "Northeast Regional Winter Sale"

Getting an extra 15% off during the Northeast Regional Winter Sale is a great reason to ride. Book online between December 2 and December 12, 2008 and enjoy this special web-only offer on travel from December 9, 2008 to February 28, 2009.

  • Travel must be booked at least seven days in advance of departure date.
  • Children 2-15 travel at 1/2 price.
  • No Promo Code need
  • Northeast Regional Trains only;No Acela Express

Click through on both links to read all of the restrictions that are associated with each promotion.

Amtrak will take about 3 hours, 20 minutes.  You'd probally find that traveling by train is a better deal both timewise and pricewise.  You'll arrive in Manhattan quicker by train than by plane taking into account the travel to and from the airport. Security checks and delays associated with flying.

All the best,

Terry
