The Man Skirt :: Will We Every Really See It?

First, Alexander the Great conquered the known world in a skirt.


Them, Mel Gibson picked a fight or two in Braveheart back in ’95.


Now, Marc Jacobs is walking the streets in them, undoubtedly carrying a nice murse for good measure.


So the fashion-related question has been asked, “Will the man skirt make it to any major collections?”


Seemingly, at this point in time, the answer is no. But, with that said, don’t rule it out. Consider these points:


It takes a real man to wear a skirt. To be a man and wear a man skirt means you need to be ultra-sure of yourself. Any man that does not have total self-confidence cannot pull off a man skirt. Why? Because no matter what, or how widely accepted it could possibly become, someone is going to snicker at you. And it’s usually going to be the guy all by himself at the end of the bar that can’t get a date - you know, the one that has zero self confidence.


Second, and I can speak to this because I discussed it with my other half, wearing a man skirt could be a whole lot more comfortable than, say, a pair of restrictive shorts in the summer. Especially doing things like hiking or golfing where there is a lot of twisting and turning involved.


Finally, there’s already a lot of guys wearing them. For example, not long ago, I saw three men in a Boston bar donning kilts. There is an online company called Utilikilts that is totally devoted to the making of the manly-man skirt; complete with pockets for flasks and Swiss Army Knives. And, hello, Marc Jacobs loves them!
