Men's Fashion: It's Not Rocket Science
Hello there Mr. Man! Are you completely confused about how to dress yourself, yet unwilling to ask your significant other for help? Do you go to the mall, looking for shirt, only to end up with 10, all in the same style? Does “dressing up” mean jeans with no holes and a t-shirt that isn’t 5 years old?
If so, you need help. Lucky for you, I’ve just arrived.
For many men, it seems that shopping is much like asking for directions; you know you should do it, but actually carrying out the task could result in a damaged id, ego, and super-ego.
While it’s pretty obvious that men don’t like to spend hours at the mall, wandering around, only to walk away frustrated and empty handed, living a fashionable life doesn’t have to be that way.
Let’s start with this rule of thumb: you don’t not have to let your wife pick out your wardrobe. Even if she insists, you can tell her that I said you are allowed to do it on your own. She may find this difficult to accept, but in time, it will get easier for you both.
Second, stay away from pleats unless you are a 6 foot tall man with a 36” inseam. Pleats make you look bulky through the waist, and they make your legs look short. Instead, choose a flat front pant, that lengthens and thins you.
Denim should be a dark wash. The faded jeans of the nineties are long gone, and unless you’re under the age of 21, you shouldn’t be wearing them anyway. A dark wash is good for casual Friday, date night, and guys night out; since you’re all about easy fashion, why not buy a pair that works for three occasions?
Now, I know it’s summer, so you want some shorts. Just remember that any shorts you buy should follow the same rules as your pants. Except for the denim part; don’t buy denim shorts. In fact, if you have denim shorts in your closet, throw them out immediately. And yes, cargo shorts are fine for a casual look.
Short-sleeve button down shirts once got a really bad rap; it was right around the time Dilbert and his cubicle office life became popular. But don’t fear the short-sleeve button-down! It’s really pretty great.
Layer it up with a t-shirt for a quick trip to the grocery store to grab the BBQ supplies, and then take it off when you get home. Polos are also a great summer option.
Alright, that’s it. Easy right? Now go grab so new shoes, and you’re all set. Don’t worry, as long as your idea of footwear doesn’t involve tube socks with sneakers or dress shoes, you will need little guidance in this area.
