Design Your Own Shoes

by on 08-19-2008 04:23 AM

Individuality is a beautiful thing.  According to Webster, “individuality” is the “quality or character of a particular person or thing that distinguishes them from others of the same kind, especially when strongly marked.”

However, some of us hesitate to show our individuality when it comes to our clothing selection.  Why is that?  Are we afraid of what others will think?  Are we not sure what our individual style really is?  Or are we just afraid to show our true colors?  Personally, I think it’s a little bit of everything.  One thing I know for certain: we’re not all khaki, white, grey, and black.

So, here’s an easy way to express your individuality. Sort of like dipping your toes in the pool before you take a giant leap.  Design your own shoes.  Whether you’re looking for tennis shoes and sneakers, or something a little more casual, there are a number of stores through Upromise Online Shopping that allow you to be creative with everything from color to pattern.

Nike offers “NIKEiD,” where you can customize your own shoes, and even apparel, if you so desire.  Lots of celebrities are fans of the NIKE site, including "Knocked Up" funnyman Seth Rogen. When talking about his NIKEiD experience in a recent interview, he disclosed that he quickly found you can be creative with color and wording but those words are censored.  Basically, you can’t put anything too terrible offensive on the back of your kicks. And, if you shop through this link and use code FALLFREESHIP, you’ll get free standard ground shipping on your order through September 5th.

Vans is another great place to design shoes.  Not to mention the fact that they are really comfortable shoes.  Everyone in our family owns at least one pair of Vans - even me! And I spend as much time as humanly possible in them.  A quick process, you simply pick the style - either the slip-on on the old-skool and you’re prompted to choose your size and quantity.  Then, you get to pick from a pallet of solid colors and different patterns for every part of the shoe.  From the vamp to the binding.  My custom slip-ons totaled $50 and were expected to be available in 5-7 weeks.

And Converse.  Who hasn’t owned a pair of Chuck Taylor’s?  A few years back, they got a little more mod, with the “one star” style, but they’re still the same shoe.  More recently, I see the original Chuck Taylor is back and as good as ever.  Out of all the sites where you are able to “design your own,” the Converse site is truly the most fun.  Bright, bold, and interactive, you’ll love it as much as your kids will.  In addition, they have the shortest lead time at just 2-4 weeks.  A variety of styles await, as does an extensive color pallet.  Pictured here is my design.

Overall, creating your own shoes is a lot of fun.  The best thing is, these one-of-a-kind designs are no more expensive than the mass-produced shoes you find at your local store.  The big difference is, no one else will have the same pair!
