Talk to the college if your financial situation has changed

I wanted to add one more piece of advice to our recent blog post about paying for college in difficult economic times such as these.

 

If you currently have a child in college and your financial situation has changed over the past few months, let your child's college know about and see if there is anything that can be done.   Your financial aid award could be adjusted if you ask.  It is certainly worth asking the question.   If you lost your job, are projecting a lower income for the year or have taken a hit to your savings it is OK to reach out to the financial aid office.  We have been speaking with colleges and they don't want to lose students for financial reasons and if they can do something they often times will.
