Energy Plus

Upromise just announced Energy Plus as a new partner. Has anyone in NY tried them already? I found one anecdote online saying they were more expensive than their original energy provider, but not much information overall.

My energy bill is typically only $30-45 with National Grid since I live in an apartment with heat and hot water included. I'm thinking that switching for 2-3 months might be worth it to get $30 or so in Upromise savings ($25 bonus plus 3% of each bill). I'd probably make money even with slightly higher energy bills.

Any thoughts?

Oh, for those of you who may not be familiar, NY deregulated the power utilities, so you can select who generates your power even though it's still delivered through your old provider (in my case, National Grid). There are no costs to switch between your current provider and Energy Plus, although from what I read on National Grid's site, you may only be able to switch to Energy Plus once per account.

Hi hoff -

I just recently made the switch. I'm in upstate NY and I called Energy Plus before I switched. I have Niagara Mohawk as a provider. Over the phone I compared their electricity charges against NiMo's charges, going back over six months. EP was consistently lower, albeit very very little. However, to get the $25 bonus as well as 3% each month into the UP acct seems well worth it to me. Our electricity charges average $130 a month, so at 3% we get back around $4.25 per month. Added to the very slight difference and it amounts to about a $4.50 per month savings.

4.25 per month, times 12 months, and having another 14 years or so before college begins results in about $700! All for doing nothing!

Well, that's good to hear, Wayne. Maybe I'll give the over-the-phone comparison a shot too. I'll post back with results if I decide to go for it!

We switched to Energy Plus Two months ago and my bill has actually gone up. After taking out the 3% for two months we have paid approx. $21 dollars more then we would have... if we stayed with National Grid alone. Still under the $25 sign up bonus... so will give it another month to see what happens... but our over all: TOTAL $/kWh is up about $0.015

Bradkrisw, electricity in general has gone up. My last bill--1 person, small 1 BR place in Queens, no AC, every single lightbulb a 13w compact fluorescent bulb--was $92. Exact same usage (240 kwH) a few months ago was $70. Last year a little over $50. It's not Energy Plus causing your skyrocketing bills, believe me.

I am considering Energy Plus myself but haven't any reviews, other than yours.  Please keep me informed of what you experience and of any benefits, etc.  I would appreciate it.

Energy Plus Update 6/9/9

OK. So I have been tracking... And after climbing to a point of just plain SILLY... I have switched back. I called and asked what the "heck" was going on... using the same most recent billing period... I would have paid only $110.68 with National Grid total... versus $186.15 using Energy Plus. OUCH!~
