The easiest way to explain the difference is:

Upromise - is a "savings" for college, but one that is not invested. Basically, if you earn $3000 through Upromise, then you have $3000 for college.

5-2-9 Account - is also a "savings" for college, however, they are run through some financial company and earn interest on however much money you have invested in the account. So, if you have $3000 in Upromise savings, that can get transferred into the 5-2-9 account and will earn additionaly money based on the age(s) of the child(ren) you are saving for. Also, if you have one of these accounts, you can also deposit money from out of your own pocket, in addition to having the Upromise money deposited.

You can sign up for a 5-2-9 through Upromise, although many financial companies and even most states offer these plans. You can then opt to have your Upromise earnings transferred to that account. You do have to meet a minimum dollar amount in your Upromise "funded" account in order to have that transfer. If you don't meet the minimum when the tranfer dates rolls around, it will just stay in your Upromise account until you meet the minimum.

Hope that helps.

I am just totally confused on how this works to help pay down your student loans. That is what I am trying to do. I have registered my bank card and my grocery card. I usually buy from ebates to get money back when shopping on-line, but I will try the link from here and see what I get. just totally confused on how this works.

Hello,

Great questions, registering your cards and shopping on line through upromise.com are great ways to earn rewards. Check out the "Pay Tab" section of the website, specifically "Upromise Loan Link" to learn more about how to link and pay down your eligible student loans or click here, http://www.upromise.com/member/loans/loanLink.do

How can I get credit for shopping in a military base? I use the credit cards that are registered. I have been with u-promise for more than three years, seems the only credit points I get are from EXXON.

Do you have a Mcdonalds on the base? If so you can purchase gc's and register them in your Upromise account that way you can earn credit. You won't get for groceries since they are not a registered grocery store and Upromise will have no way to track your purchases. Your only way would be to make online purchases or travel off base to a registered grocery store, sign up for the reward card they have and register it. When you shop there you would earn money on qualified items. Visit mobil/exxon for gas, make online purchases thru Upromise, and sign up for the Upromise credit card that way no matter where you shop you can earn 1% even at the base grocery/clothing stores.

hi,
I am in search for the same theme with Mel. We are military family going school in NE area and has been trying with both Upromise and the local commissary to link the two together for the benefits of many other military families that shop at the base commissary (as well as BaseXchange) - especialy the new military members with kids and more important yet is the new military member are at the "starting" salary and does have one or more kids in their family.

These are the folks that could use a lot of help from private and commercial organizations that make goods and provide services which so many military families uses and consumed. Can some one think of a way that the 4 parties can work to gether for the benefits of the military families like all of the non-military families enjoyed from Upromise + Groceries Stores + Name Brand Product Companies and the consumers (all of us + hoping soon to be the military families). I would appreciate any suggestion or possiblbe I deals that I can start and run with it with the local Air Force Base I am at ++ the help of UPROMISE organization. Thanks-a-Million

That's a great idea! We are a military family too. This would help out a lot if this could be possible.

It would be great if they could somehow link the MilitaryStar card to Upromise. Is there a way to do this since it's a credit card? It can only be used on base.
