Keep in mind - those areas near the turnpike are always going to be higher -- no doubt the owner of the Exxon station pays a significant premium for the location from the landlord.

I live just North of Annapolis and, by far, the cheapest stations near us are Exxon stations. So, in my area I have the luxury of knowing that, not only am I buying the cheapest, quality gas within 5 miles of my home, I am also getting college savings. My business requires me to drive around the Maryland/DC/Northern Virginia area and the Exxon stations are the cheapest name brand gas out there. (and I know where all the best ones are). You might be able to find a generic brand gas station for a few cents less but then you are putting generic gas in your tank. Once you factor in the 2% cash back and 1 cent a gallon, Exxon wins out by a wide margin.

Plus, I really like the idea of buying gas from an American company. Many people like to find cheap gas at Citgo stations. Lovely - Citgo is owned, of course, by the state gas company of Venezuela so you can fund and support Mr. Chavez' hatred toward the U.S. BP Amoco and Shell are British companies.

Thanks for sharing that bit of info...I agree that it's worth a few cents to support American companies...especially those willing to give back through programs like UPromise.

To magnets: Who says those with large balances received them by paying too much for groceries? I've been on here for one year with no Citi card and I have $133 and very little came from groceries (like a dime or so).

Everyone else:
When we travel, I booked airfare online and looked up Upromise restaurants. When they had the $10 dining bonus, I took advantage for 2 of the 3 months.

Now I have a Citi card, so I plan to earn $25-50/month. This will be accomplished by dining at Upromise restaurants about 1-2 times per week and using the card for EVERYTHING...daycare, gas, groceries, cable and cell phone bills, etc.

Oh how I wish we had Exxon/Mobile gas stations.....but nowhere within 200 miles of my home.....

If you are using your debit card for any purchase you have to select "credit card" on the screen for it to register with upromise.
Also be sure to keep your cards up to date on the upromise web site.

What kind of account is a 5-2-9? Is that some kind of savings account from a bank or what?

a 5-2-9 is a college savings plan. Typically it invests money based upon the age of the child. The younger the chiild the more aggressive the investments. Once your Child nears college age the investments are more conservitive. It is a great wat to put money away and have it grow.
