Finding the College that Fits

Alexis and Peter, two recent high school graduates profiled in The Worcester Telegram, were both accepted to their first choice college.  What did these two seniors do right?  Why did they get accepted while thousands of other kids were denied from McGill University and Wellesley College?

While students are looking for colleges that are a good fit for them both academically and socially, colleges currently have the luxury to do the same thing.  Although a student’s grades and standardized test scores are usually the most important criteria in the admissions process, colleges, in turn, are looking for students that will be a good match for their particular institution.

And while it’s pretty much a guarantee that Alexis and Peter earned strong grades throughout high school and probably had correspondingly high SAT or ACT scores, Wellesley and McGill recognized that these two students were all-around good matches for their school.  Although the actual application process is often the most stressful component of getting into college, it’s critically important for students and their families to spend the necessary time researching and visiting schools that are good matches for them.  THIS is what makes a difference in finding the perfect match—and THIS is often what tips the scales in a student’s favor.

What tips do you have to help families find the perfect match?
