Course Selection

My son is thinking about dropping his foreign language course during his senior year of high school. Will this hurt his chances of getting accepted to college?

Although requirements vary among colleges, most schools prefer a challenging senior course load. Many of the most competitive schools in the country will expect a student to complete four years of the same foreign language in high school. For students who have struggled in foreign languages, it may be acceptable to drop this course during senior year—but it’s important to replace that course with another challenging academic class. After all, it’s not going to benefit your son if he earns a poor grade in his senior foreign language class.  Instead, students are better off choosing to “double up” in a subject that they are passionate about (by taking two history courses, for example), in order to maintain a challenging curriculum.

Have you come across scheduling challenges as you plan for your child’s senior year of high school?

I am the mom of a 12 year old college bound girl. I know that college is quite a ways down the road, but as a sole parent living pay check to pay check I feel that this is the time that I should start investigating the financial aspects. I have belonged to Upromise for several years, but since my spending is primarily on monthly household cost of living expenses, i.e. mortgage, utilities, etc., my account is not growing. I don't want to wait until she enters high school only to find out that I should have been doing something else. Help!
